About this position
University of Exeter is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Fellow position in climate science, Earth system modelling, peatlands, permafrost, and greenhouse gas dynamics.
This is a full-time, fixed-term, ERC Synergy-funded post within the CLIMPEAT project, a collaboration involving the University of Exeter, University of Stockholm, University of Innsbruck, and LSCE. The role runs from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2029.
The successful applicant will contribute to the development of the PEAT model, work closely with the LSCE team in France, and help design and evaluate simulations of northern peatland evolution from the last glacial maximum to pre-industrial times. The project also focuses on the role of peatlands in historical and present-day greenhouse gas budgets, the vulnerability of peatlands and permafrost to climate change, and feedbacks to the climate system.
Eligibility highlights: candidates for the Associate role should have a relevant PhD or be nearing completion; candidates for the Fellow role should have a relevant PhD or equivalent experience, with stronger evidence of research independence and leadership. Applicants should be able to run global vegetation or climate models over long temporal integrations, analyse large climatic and environmental datasets, and communicate results through publications and presentations. For the Fellow level, experience in developing research objectives, securing funding, supervising others, and leading collaborative research is expected.
Funding and salary: the position is funded by ERC Synergy; salary starts at £35,302 for the Research Associate or £44,352 for the Research Fellow, depending on experience.
Application deadline: 11 November 2026.
