About this position

University of Sydney is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Activity on the Sun and Solar-like Stars at the Camperdown Campus, School of Physics.

This postdoctoral project sits in solar and stellar astrophysics and focuses on the theory, data analysis, and computation behind solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), solar active regions, and related phenomena on solar-like stars. The work aims to improve understanding of the source regions of flare and CME activity and to develop and refine modelling and analysis methods that can also be applied to stellar flares.

The role is a full-time 3-year fixed-term appointment. Salary is advertised at Level A AUD 117,936–125,896 plus 17% superannuation.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in physics or applied mathematics (or completion before starting), strong computational skills, experience with compiled codes and Python or similar languages, demonstrated ability in theory and data-driven computational modelling, and a track record of publications in refereed journals. Experience with astrophysical datasets, research record-keeping, and preparation of papers and presentations is also requested.

The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Michael Wheatland and collaborate with researchers at the University of Sydney and internationally. The post involves publishing in high-impact journals, presenting results, and assisting students on related research projects.

Applications must be submitted via the Apply button on the job page. A cover letter, CV, and supporting documents are required. The closing date is 29 November 2026.
