About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), based in London, UK, is open in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The project, Dark Channelome, is a BBSRC Pioneer Award research programme led by Dr Wojciech Kopec. It focuses on the physics of predicted protein pores and whether they can reveal undiscovered human ion channels. The work combines AI-based structural modelling with molecular simulation to discover and functionally classify candidate channels.

The successful candidate will generate and assess membrane-protein assemblies, analyse pore geometry and hydration, and use computational electrophysiology to test candidates and understand why some plausible pores do not conduct ions. The role includes collaboration with partners at Oxford, turning computational findings into experimental predictions, and contributing to an openly shared research resource.

This is a strong opportunity for researchers interested in biomolecular molecular dynamics, protein structural modelling, membrane-protein biophysics, ion channels, scientific programming, and Linux-based HPC. The position is full time, fixed term for 24 months, with access to local GPU resources and QMUL high-performance computing facilities.

Applicants should have a relevant PhD by the start date. Experience in biomolecular MD, protein structural modelling, scientific programming, Linux-based HPC, and membrane-protein biophysics is expected. Experience with AlphaFold-based prediction or ion-channel simulation is advantageous.

Salary is £42,933–£52,790 per annum. Candidates close to completing their PhD may initially be appointed in the junior research training zone (£39,187–£39,802) until completion of the doctorate.

The deadline is 8 November 2026 at 23:55. Applications should be submitted via the QMUL jobs portal using Opportunity ID 11566. Review the job pack for details before applying.
