About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in AI for Quantum Computing for the Learning Systems Group and Quantum Science Center.

The researcher will develop advanced machine learning methods for quantum computing, including deep neural decoders for quantum error correction, AI-driven error mitigation, noise characterization, automated quantum circuit synthesis and optimization, and physics-informed machine learning. The role also includes designing AI-assisted and multi-agent quantum workflows for circuit generation, QEC decoding, experiment analysis, and benchmarking on quantum hardware and GPU/HPC systems.

Research may use platforms and frameworks such as Qiskit, PennyLane, CUDA-Q, and Stim, with opportunities to work across superconducting, trapped-ion, and neutral-atom quantum hardware. The successful candidate will collaborate with machine learning researchers, software engineers, quantum information scientists, academic partners, industry, and national laboratories; publish in leading venues; contribute to open-source quantum AI software; support proposals; and mentor students.

Applicants must have received their Ph.D. no more than five years before applying and must complete all degree requirements before the appointment begins. The appointment may last up to 24 months, with possible extension subject to performance and funding. Three letters of recommendation are required. The position also requires eligibility for an HSPD-12 PIV credential or an applicable favorable LSSO determination, together with a federal background investigation.

ORNL offers competitive employment compensation and benefits, including health, retirement, insurance, paid leave, educational assistance, relocation assistance, and wellness programs. The position remains open for at least five days and closes when a qualified candidate is identified or hired. Applications should be submitted through the ORNL jobs portal.
