About this position
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), United States, is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Learning Systems Group within the Computer Science and Mathematics Division. The project focuses on Generative AI, large language models (LLMs), multi-agent systems, and human-in-the-loop AI for laboratory operations and safety.
The researcher will develop and evaluate generative AI architectures, agentic workflows, instruction-tuned LLMs, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems for operational safety. Research applications include automated hazard identification, incident trend analysis, predictive maintenance, risk scoring, safety compliance, proactive risk mitigation, and decision support for human operators in high-consequence environments. The role includes collaboration with computer scientists, machine-learning researchers, software developers, safety experts, and laboratory operations teams.
Responsibilities include building scalable AI operations tools, developing explainable and trustworthy AI validation frameworks, deploying ML pipelines on GPU resources, publishing in AI/ML and safety-engineering venues, contributing to proposals, and potentially releasing open-source tools.
Applicants need a Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI/ML, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. Candidates expecting to complete their Ph.D. by the end of 2026 may also apply. Strong Python, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, LLM fine-tuning, multi-agent AI, and relevant software engineering experience are required. The Ph.D. must have been awarded within five years of application, and three recommendation letters are required.
The appointment is available for up to 24 months, with possible extension subject to performance and funding. ORNL provides competitive pay and extensive employee benefits. Applicants must be able to obtain the required HSPD-12 PIV credential or applicable site-specific clearance determination. Applications should be submitted through the ORNL jobs portal under requisition 17380.
