About this position
The University of Iowa Department of Radiation Oncology is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on hyperpolarized xenon-129 (Xe-129) MRI-guided functional lung avoidance radiotherapy.
The research will emphasize quantitative image analysis, treatment-planning development, and integration of functional lung imaging into MR-guided adaptive radiotherapy using the Elekta Unity MR-Linac. Responsibilities include analyzing Xe-129 MRI ventilation and gas-exchange data, developing automated image-processing pipelines, registering functional maps to planning CT and MR images, evaluating functional-avoidance treatment strategies, supporting clinical trials, managing data, and preparing manuscripts.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of medical physicists, MRI scientists, radiation oncologists, and pulmonologists. Available technologies include a hyperpolarizer, Siemens 3T Vida multinuclear MRI scanner, Elekta Unity MR-Linac, and clinical treatment-planning systems.
Applicants should have completed or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in medical physics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, computer science, or a related field. Peer-reviewed publications or scientific presentations, Python or MATLAB programming, medical image-analysis experience, and strong written and verbal communication skills are required or preferred. Experience with deformable image registration, radiotherapy treatment planning, quantitative MRI, hyperpolarized gas imaging, or functional lung imaging is advantageous.
The position is available immediately, begins by mutual agreement, and has an initial two-year appointment. The salary is $63,480–$77,076 annually, depending on post-Ph.D. experience. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. The application deadline is December 1, 2026.
