About this position
The University of Arizona’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral research associate for Dr. Miao Zhang’s laboratory in Phoenix. The laboratory studies the structure and function of membrane proteins, with particular emphasis on ion channels and transporters.
The research program uses cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to investigate membrane-protein architecture and mechanisms, supporting longer-term applications in AI-driven drug discovery. The role also encompasses multidisciplinary research connected with iron metabolism and liver diseases under the direction of Dr. Zhang and Assistant Research Professor Dr. Young-Woo Nam.
The postdoctoral researcher will design and conduct complex projects, develop experimental methods, collect and analyze scientific data, and refine protocols based on experimental results. Laboratory work includes protein expression in mammalian cells, purification of membrane proteins, cryo-EM data collection and processing, and three-dimensional model building. The researcher will present findings in laboratory meetings and at conferences, prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication, contribute to grant-writing activities, and collaborate across the department and wider university.
The position is part of an extramurally well-funded research program with opportunities for high-impact publications and development of an independent research trajectory. The laboratory provides mentorship in scientific development and career advancement and emphasizes an inclusive, supportive research environment. The researcher may also assist with supervision of laboratory staff and contribute to daily laboratory operations.
