About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in MPEX Boundary and PMI Modeling within the Power Exhaust and Particle Control (PEPC) group of the Fusion Energy Division.

The project focuses on plasma physics, boundary plasma modeling, plasma-material interactions, impurity transport, and divertor-relevant target conditions for the Materials Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX), a high-flux superconducting linear plasma facility nearing completion at ORNL. The successful candidate will perform 3D plasma boundary simulations, integrate them with impurity transport models, validate results against experimental data, and help optimize RF power coupling and target geometries for upcoming device campaigns.

This is a temporary 24-month postdoctoral position with the potential for extension, depending on performance and funding availability. ORNL notes competitive pay and benefits, plus relocation assistance.

Applicants should have a PhD in Plasma Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years, or expect to complete the PhD by June 30, 2027. Preferred experience includes boundary/divertor plasma physics, codes such as EMC3-EIRENE, SOLPS, UEDGE, or SOLEDGE, plasma-material interaction modeling (sputtering, impurity transport, sheath physics), and programming in Python, MATLAB, Fortran, or C++.

The position is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States. Applications are submitted through the ORNL careers portal. If you have trouble applying, contact [email protected].
