About this position

The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate in nautical chart symbology, digital cartography, visualization, and maritime navigation systems.

The researcher will investigate how maritime symbology behaves across overlapping data layers, varying backgrounds, transparency and blending conditions, and operational display constraints. The work combines visual perception, computer graphics, geographic information science, perceptual evaluation, and nautical cartography. Responsibilities include designing and evaluating perceptually grounded symbology, conducting analytical or user-centered studies, developing prototype tools in Python, contributing to digital chart compilation and geospatial workflows, and supporting standards development involving International Hydrographic Organization working groups and external partners including NOAA.

Applicants must have a PhD in Computer Science, Visualization, Cartography, Geographic Information Science, or a related field, along with experience in visualization, computer graphics, or perceptual evaluation and demonstrated Python programming ability. Preferred experience includes cartography or GIS, geospatial data processing, color spaces and perceptual metrics, maritime navigation systems, ENC/ECDIS or S-100 standards, and human-factors or perceptual experiments.

The position is located at the University of New Hampshire’s main campus in Durham, United States. Compensation is $62,000–$67,000 per year. Employment depends on continued external sponsor funding. Applicants should submit a CV or resume, cover letter, and contact information for three professional references through the Workday application portal.
