About this position
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organic Synthetic Chemistry to work on selective recognition of lanthanide ions. The project sits in the Chemical Separations Group within the Separations and Polymer Chemistry Section, Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate.
The successful candidate will design and synthesize new organic ligands, purify them using standard preparative techniques, and characterize them with tools such as NMR, FTIR, UV–visible spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry. The research focuses on understanding how ligand structure influences lanthanide binding and separation performance, with opportunities to contribute to experimental planning, present at meetings and conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
This is a postdoctoral opening, not a scholarship call. The appointment can last up to 24 months and may be extended depending on performance and funding availability. ORNL describes the role as a mission-driven research position with competitive pay and benefits, including medical and retirement plans, flexible work hours, and relocation assistance.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD in organic chemistry or a closely related field completed within the last five years (preferred within the last three years). Preferred experience includes photochemistry, crystallization of ligand-metal complexes, stability constant measurements, and ICP-OES/ICP-MS data collection and interpretation. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge; foreign nationals may need a favorable LSSO determination depending on U.S. residency history.
To apply, use the ORNL online application portal and submit the required materials. The posting requests three letters of reference, which may be uploaded directly or emailed to [email protected] with the position title and number in the subject line.
Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States.
