About this position

University of Bristol School of Earth Sciences is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Petrological Controls on Ore Genesis.

This 24-month, full-time, fixed-term post is part of a NERC-funded project on how copper is transported through the Earth’s interior in subduction zones and concentrated into porphyry copper deposits. The work is directly relevant to critical minerals and the transition to Net Zero.

The project combines three main research strands:
- Geological fieldwork in the Laramide Porphyry Province, Arizona
- Advanced analytical work including synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy at Diamond Light Source, EPMA, Raman, and LA-ICP-MS
- High-pressure, high-temperature experiments using diamond anvil cells, piston-cylinder presses, and cold-seal vessels

You will work with co-investigators at the University of Bristol, UCL Earth Sciences, and Diamond Light Source, with a project partner at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Full training will be provided, and the post explicitly says applicants should not be put off if some desirable skills are new to them.

Eligibility highlights: postdoctoral level; experience or interest in petrology, geochemistry, economic geology, analytical methods, and experimental petrology is relevant. The advert does not mention a PhD requirement in the post text provided, but this is a research associate role.

Funding and salary: NERC-funded; grade J; salary £43,482–£50,253.

Deadline: 5 August 2026.

How to apply: Use the jobs.ac.uk application link in the post. Informal enquiries may be sent to [email protected].
