About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 6G and Beyond Wireless Communications at Tampere University, Finland.

The Wireless Systems research group at the Electrical Engineering Unit, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the 4-year Research Council of Finland project NOISY: Toward Noise-Driven Communication for Secure, Energy-Efficient, and Low-Complexity Wireless Networks. The project investigates a novel idea: using natural and artificial noise as part of the communication process to create secure, low-power, and low-complexity wireless systems for future 6G and IoT networks.

The position sits within a strong multidisciplinary research environment at Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences, with work connected to the Tampere Wireless Research Center. The research spans wireless system theory, algorithm design, system-level analysis, and practical experimentation, with topics including advanced physical layer design, multiple-antenna systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, integrated sensing and communications, non-terrestrial and UAV networks, physical layer security, quantum-enabled communications, semantic and AI-native wireless systems, and energy-efficient communication.

The successful candidate will contribute to theoretical modeling, signaling, algorithm design, simulations, and practical validation of low-power, low-complexity, and secure wireless communication concepts. Depending on expertise and interests, duties may include developing models and methods for noise-driven wireless communication, designing signaling schemes for future IoT and 6G systems, studying secure and covert communication approaches, carrying out analytical work and performance comparisons, and supporting proof-of-concept demonstrations using software-defined radio platforms. The role also involves preparing scientific publications, contributing to project reporting and dissemination, participating in project management, mentoring PhD students, and supervising thesis projects.

This is a fixed-term position for 22 months, with the possibility of extension. The start date is mutually agreed and may be as early as 1 September 2026. The salary is based on the Finnish University Salary System; a typical starting salary is 4000 EUR per month. The role includes benefits such as occupational health care, flexible working arrangements, modern research infrastructure, and support from international HR services for settling in Finland.

Applicants must hold a PhD in electrical engineering, wireless communications, or a related area, and should have strong experience in physical layer wireless communications. The call explicitly expects at least three publications in top IEEE ComSoc journals as main contributing author. Experience in physical layer security, low-power or IoT communications, wireless transceiver design, signal processing, or SDR-based prototyping is advantageous. Applications must be submitted in English through the online recruitment system.

The application deadline is 3 August 2026. Required documents include a CV with publication list, a one-page application letter naming two referees, degree certificates, and other supporting documents such as a thesis or up to three relevant publications.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply
