About this position

The Feres Lab in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity at Harvard School of Dental Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work at the intersection of applied data science, machine learning, microbiology, and oral health.

The fellow will join a multidisciplinary research environment involving dentists, microbiologists, and data scientists. The work spans Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Core for Computational Biomedicine in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the Blavatnik Institute, Harvard Medical School.

The project focuses on building common data models, data dictionaries, and reproducible pipelines that harmonize clinical, demographic, microbiome, and immunological data. The fellow will develop machine learning models for clustering, prognostic analysis, and causal treatment-effect estimation. The research connects computational biology and biomedical informatics with oral medicine, infection, immunology, and clinical research.

Additional scholarly activities include drafting manuscripts, presenting findings at scientific meetings, maintaining a publicly available codebase, and contributing to future grant applications. The position provides mentored preparation for an independent academic research career, with opportunities for first-author publications, national and international presentations, access to Harvard Medical School’s high-performance computing cluster, and support for individual fellowships and career development awards.

Funding details

The position is salaried and benefits eligible. Postdoctoral fellow salary is determined by the number of years post-PhD; salary information is provided through Harvard Medical School postdoctoral guidelines. The appointment is for one year and may be extended based on performance, business needs, and continued funding.

What's required

Applicants must hold a research doctorate (PhD, ScD, DMSc, or equivalent) concentrated in data science, computer science, biomedical informatics, biostatistics, epidemiology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Candidates from other doctoral fields may be considered if they demonstrate sufficient computational or microbiological expertise. Proficiency in Python and R, excellent written and spoken English communication, and the ability to work across clinical and computational teams are required. Preferred qualifications include machine learning applied to clinical or biomedical data with peer-reviewed publications, microbiome or immunological assay experience, Git, SQL, shared high-performance computing workflows such as SLURM, knowledge of periodontology or dental research, and a clear interest in an academic research career. A dental degree such as DMD is welcome but not required.
