About this position
University of Michigan Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLaSP) is recruiting a postdoctoral Research Fellow in atmospheric science, Earth science, and physics focused on atmospheric radiation, passive radiometric remote sensing, and tropical ice clouds.
The position is in Prof. Claire Pettersen’s group and is tied to the NASA-funded PolSIR satellite mission. The project centers on developing and applying radiative flux products using colocated observations from NOAA geostationary satellite imagers to study radiation and dynamical coupled processes in tropical convective ice clouds.
Responsibilities include software development, validation and monitoring of radiative flux products, scientific analysis of satellite datasets, manuscript and conference preparation, documentation, reporting, and mentoring junior researchers. The work involves collaboration with the broader PolSIR team, including researchers at the University of Wisconsin, NASA-GSFC, Texas A&M, and Columbia University.
Required qualifications: a PhD in atmospheric science, applied physics, or a closely related field; background in atmospheric radiation and passive radiometric remote sensing; strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar; strong communication skills; and evidence of independent research and scientific writing. Preferred experience includes high-volume datasets, high-throughput computing, machine learning on satellite data, and cloud computing.
Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S. The appointment is initially for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years depending on performance and funding. Primary funding is NASA.
How to apply: submit a cover letter, CV, and two professional references in a single PDF to Prof. Claire Pettersen and Dr. Aronne Merrelli by 2026-11-02. The cover letter should be attached as the first page of the resume and should explain your interest and relevant experience.
