About this position

The Australian National University (ANU) Research School of Earth Sciences is seeking a Research Fellow to join the Rio Tinto Centre for Future Materials (RTCFM)-funded GEM-Cu project. This interdisciplinary postdoctoral position focuses on building a 'Virtual Earth' to understand copper deposit formation by linking deep Earth processes such as mantle flow, plate motions, and lithospheric stress to ore genesis over geological timescales. The successful candidate will work at the interface of geodynamics, plate tectonics, and data-driven Earth science, integrating large-scale geodynamic and plate-reconstruction modelling with advanced statistical and machine-learning methods.

Key research areas include the use of plate reconstruction tools (GPlates), mantle convection modelling frameworks (G-ADOPT), and the development of statistical and machine learning approaches to predict copper-favourable conditions across deep time. The role also involves creating decision tools to support interpretation and uptake of research findings. The Research Fellow will be expected to develop independent and collaborative research, generate predictive maps of copper-favourable environments, publish in leading journals, and present at conferences.

The position offers the opportunity to contribute to research, education, and service within the School, including teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising Honours, Masters, and PhD students, and engaging in outreach activities. The successful applicant will report to Professor Rhodri Davies and join a vibrant, collegial research environment with strong national and international collaborations and world-class facilities.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Computational Geoscience, or a closely related field, with experience in numerical modelling, geological or geophysical datasets, and tools such as GPlates and G-ADOPT. Skills in statistical inference and machine learning are required, and a background in mineral systems or economic geology is desirable. The position is a fixed-term appointment for up to 3 years, with a competitive salary and full employment benefits.

To apply, candidates should submit a statement addressing the selection criteria and a current CV with referee details via the ANU job portal. For further information, contact Prof. Rhodri Davies at [email protected]. The application deadline is March 23, 2026.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD in Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Computational Geoscience, or a closely related discipline. They should demonstrate a strong track record of independent research integrating numerical modelling with geological or geophysical datasets. Experience with plate reconstruction tools such as GPlates and geodynamic modelling frameworks (e.g., G-ADOPT or equivalent) is required, along with demonstrated capability in statistical inference and/or machine-learning approaches. A background in mineral systems, mineral exploration, and/or economic geology is desirable but not essential. Candidates must show commitment to securing external research funding, willingness to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and potential or experience in supervising research students. Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a cross-disciplinary environment are essential.

How to apply

Apply online via the provided ANU job portal link. Upload a statement addressing the selection criteria and a current CV including contact details for at least three referees. Ensure all required documents are submitted before the deadline. Contact Prof. Rhodri Davies for further information.
