About this position
Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the Michael Sars Centre, University of Bergen, in the Čapek group.
The project, Mechanisms of temperature robustness in fish embryos, asks how fish embryos maintain coordinated development when temperature changes the rates of molecular and cellular processes. The successful candidate will investigate how temperature influences developmental signalling and gene expression, and how these responses connect to cell-fate specification, tissue organisation and embryonic development.
The work combines transcriptomic experiments, bioinformatic analyses, molecular assays, genome editing and microscopy of live and fixed embryos. A central aim is to connect transcriptional responses to developmental outcomes and to functionally test candidate mechanisms underlying temperature robustness. The appointee will work closely with the group leader and lab members while developing an independent research project within this framework.
This is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral position for 3 years, funded by the University of Bergen. The role is based in Bergen, Norway, at the Michael Sars Centre.
Eligibility highlights include a completed PhD degree (or thesis submitted by the deadline, with the PhD awarded before employment), documented transcriptomics experience, and documented experimental developmental biology experience. Experience with fish or marine organisms is an advantage, as is work in evolutionary developmental biology, comparative developmental biology, or developmental responses to environmental variation such as temperature. Strong written and spoken English is required.
The application package should include a brief statement of research interests and motivation, a detailed justification of qualifications against the listed criteria, a CV, transcripts and diplomas, relevant certificates/references, a publication list with links, and the names and contact details of two referees. One referee should be the main PhD advisor. Applications must be uploaded in JobbNorge.
Deadline: 17 November 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Oslo). Salary upon appointment is NOK 685,900 gross per year, with the possibility of a higher salary for an especially well-qualified applicant. The appointment may be extended in some cases up to a maximum total of four years.

What's required
Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) in developmental biology, molecular biology, marine biology or a related field, or must have submitted their doctoral thesis before the deadline; the PhD must be awarded before employment starts. Documented research experience in transcriptomics is required, including experimental design, execution, bioinformatic analysis and interpretation. Documented experience in experimental developmental biology is also required, with techniques such as microinjection, immunostaining, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and microscopy considered relevant. Experience with fish and/or marine organisms, evolutionary developmental biology, comparative developmental biology, or developmental responses to environmental variation including temperature is an advantage. Applicants must have strong independent and collaborative working skills and good written and spoken English.
How to apply
Prepare a brief motivation letter and a detailed statement showing how you meet each requirement, including relevant advantages. Include a CV, transcripts and diplomas, publications list with links, relevant certificates/references, and contact details for two referees, one being your main PhD advisor. Upload the application and certified translations in English or a Scandinavian language via JobbNorge before the deadline.
