About this position
University College London is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Molecular Quantum Theory to join the Molecular Quantum Theory Group in the Department of Chemistry, led by Dr Hugh Burton.
The successful researcher will work on the international project “Quantifying Utilizable Entanglement in Chemistry from First Principles.” The research will investigate quantum correlations and entanglement in chemical processes, including fermion-fermion and fermion-boson entanglement in molecules, their stability under realistic chemical conditions, and many-body methods for predicting these phenomena from first principles.
The role also involves developing computational methods and software for molecular applications. The postholder will collaborate with the Evangelista Group at Emory University in the United States, with opportunities for research visits. Additional duties include supporting undergraduate and postgraduate research students, contributing to future project design and funding proposals, publishing results, and presenting at international conferences.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry, Physics, or a related discipline. Knowledge of quantum mechanics and molecular quantum theory, together with experience using quantum chemistry software and scientific programming, is required. Python, C++, and quantum information theory experience is desirable. Strong English communication skills and the ability to work in an international collaborative environment are expected.
This is a full-time fixed-term appointment for 36 months, ideally starting in January 2027 or as soon as possible. The salary is £40,603–£43,749 per year including London Allowance, with Grade 7 appointment dependent on having been awarded the PhD. Applications should include a CV, publication list, and one-page cover letter. The closing date is 26 November 2026.
