About this position
The University of Queensland is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Officer in severe thunderstorm observations and analysis at the St Lucia Campus in Brisbane, Australia.
Working with researchers from the School of Civil Engineering, the School of the Environment and the Bureau of Meteorology, the appointee will undertake fieldwork across Southeast Queensland during severe thunderstorm events. The research involves operating mobile radar, LiDAR and weather-monitoring systems; capturing near-surface hail and wind observations; analysing atmospheric datasets; and improving methods for understanding severe storms and their impacts.
The role also contributes to research publications, industry engagement, and the supervision and development of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students. Relevant research interests include severe weather, atmospheric flows, weather radar, LiDAR, field observation, atmospheric data analysis, optimisation and inverse problems, geophysics, and computational fluid dynamics.
Applicants should have completed or be close to completing a PhD in Engineering or Science, or hold an MPhil or equivalent with relevant research experience. Essential skills include analysis of large observational or numerical atmospheric datasets and programming in Python, R or an equivalent language. Experience with radar, LiDAR, weather stations, severe-weather field campaigns, complex fluid-flow modelling, or publications is advantageous.
The appointment is fixed-term through 11 February 2028, with a salary of AUD 85,372.89–113,659.72 plus 17% superannuation. Visa sponsorship is unavailable, and applicants must have unrestricted Australian work rights. Applications close on 11 November 2026 at 11:00 pm AEST.

What's required
Applicants should have completed or be near completion of a PhD in Engineering or Science, focused on measurement, analysis or modelling of atmospheric flows; applicants with an MPhil or equivalent research qualification in these areas may also be considered. Demonstrated competency in analysing large observational or numerical datasets of atmospheric variables and mathematical programming and analysis in Python, R or equivalent is required. Desirable experience includes radar, LiDAR or surface-based weather-station observations; fieldwork campaigns, especially during severe weather; optimisation or inverse problems in earth sciences or geophysics; computational fluid dynamics or other complex fluid-flow modelling; publications in refereed journals; and conference presentations. Applicants must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the appointment; visa sponsorship is unavailable.
