About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Sustainable Aviation Fuels at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada).

The Upham group in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to develop a tandem catalytic process that converts syngas into oxymethylene ethers (OMEs) for sustainable aviation fuels. The project is experimentally focused and combines heterogeneous catalysis, catalyst synthesis, catalyst characterization, flow reactors, gas chromatography, reaction engineering, and process scale-up considerations.

The successful candidate will join a research team working on heterogeneous and molten metal catalysis, methane pyrolysis, CO2 conversion, and carbon valorization. The role includes designing and operating flow reactors, analyzing reaction products, quantifying conversion/selectivity/yield, planning experiments, preparing manuscripts, and helping supervise graduate and undergraduate researchers.

Eligibility: a PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a related field completed within 5 years of the start date; hands-on experience in heterogeneous catalysis; publication record in catalysis or reaction engineering; and the ability to work independently and mentor students. Preferred experience includes methanol/dimethyl ether synthesis, formaldehyde chemistry, oxygenate fuels, reactor modelling/process simulation, and in situ or operando characterization.

Funding: the position is full-time with an expected salary of 75,000 CAD per year and a comprehensive benefits package. Initial appointment is for 1 year, with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

Deadline: applications are accepted until 2026-11-30, with review beginning immediately. Applicants must submit a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV with publications, and three references by email to Dr. Chester Upham and Hailey Boyer.
