About this position
Research Fellow (Postdoctoral) in Sustainable Manufacturing of Functional Ceramics at the University of Birmingham, School of Metallurgy and Materials, is open in the United Kingdom.
This fixed-term postdoctoral research role is part of the SuMaCer project: Sustainable Manufacturing of Functional Ceramics for Europe’s Net-Zero Industry Energy Devices, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme. The successful candidate will contribute to research on the sustainability assessment and recycling pathways of functional ceramics used in energy devices such as solid oxide fuel cells and metal-supported sodium batteries.
The project sits within the Energy Materials Group and focuses on the development and application of recycling strategies, safe disassembly, materials recovery, elemental quantification, and life cycle assessment of battery- and ceramics-related materials. The role includes work with analytical techniques such as CT, ICP-OES, SEM, XRD, and XRF, alongside data collection and interpretation to evaluate the effectiveness of recycling routes.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant area such as materials recycling, battery manufacture, mineral engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or materials science. Strong analytical skills, the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, and experience working in interdisciplinary teams are important. Experience in recycling, material separation, and elemental quantification is especially desirable.
The appointment is full time, with a salary range of £36,636 to £46,049 and potential progression to £48,822. The contract runs up to August 2029. Applications close on 18 November 2026.
Informal enquiries can be sent to Emma Kendrick at [email protected].
