About this position
Mass General Brigham / McLean Hospital is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in translational neuroscience with a strong emphasis on microscopy, neuroimaging, and shared-core leadership. The role is based at McLean Hospital and is described as a combined postdoctoral fellowship and Microscopy Core Manager appointment.
The research program focuses on how stress and immune signaling affect interactions among neurons, glia, and the neurovascular unit (NVU), with relevance to psychiatric disorders and symptom dimensions such as anxiety, irritability, depression, and anhedonia. The fellow will work with deeply characterized human postmortem brain specimens (especially amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex), cellular preparations from the same donors, and molecular/cellular datasets integrated with clinical phenotypes using natural-language-processing approaches.
Research keywords and methods include electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, two-photon microscopy, fluorescence imaging, quantitative image analysis, 3D reconstruction, multiplex in situ RNA/protein detection, primary human astrocyte/microglial/endothelial cultures, iPSC-derived glial and vascular models, cytokine and stress challenge experiments, and single-cell or single-nucleus transcriptomics.
In parallel, the successful candidate will manage the McLean Hospital Microscopy Core, supporting investigators with study design, sample preparation, data acquisition, image processing, quantitative analysis, training, maintenance, scheduling, budgeting, billing, and vendor coordination. The core includes TEM, confocal, and two-photon systems.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree in neuroscience, cell biology, molecular biology, biomedical imaging, neuropathology, or a related field. Strong hands-on microscopy experience, strong scientific productivity, and peer-reviewed publications are required. Preferred experience includes TEM, advanced fluorescence microscopy, human postmortem tissue, neuroanatomy, neuropathology, cell culture, neuroimmunology, BBB biology, transcriptomics, and research administration.
To apply, email a cover letter, CV, and three references to Sabina Berretta, M.D. at [email protected]. The posting does not list a deadline. The role is onsite in Belmont, Massachusetts, United States.
