About this position

Vanderbilt University is advertising a postdoctoral research position in the laboratories of Dr. Carl Johnson and Dr. Alexandre Tiriac in the Department of Biological Sciences. The project sits at the intersection of neuroscience, circadian rhythms, biological timekeeping, and neurodevelopmental disorders, with a translational focus on Angelman Syndrome and disrupted neural activity during early development.

The Tiriac lab studies how spontaneous neural activity shapes the developing nervous system and how early disruptions may contribute to cognitive and neurodevelopmental disorders. The Johnson lab studies the cellular, molecular, and evolutionary biology of biological timekeeping, especially circadian clocks. The postdoctoral project will examine the neuroscience of the circadian system in mammals and its relationship to Angelman Syndrome, including work on neuronal imprinting of Ube3a ligase and circadian rhythms in mouse models.

The role is designed for an independent researcher who can plan and execute experiments, analyze data, generate figures, and draft manuscripts for neuroscience journals. Example methods include dissections, surgeries, time-restricted feeding, electrophysiological recording with multielectrode arrays, histology, and computational analysis. The postdoc will also be supported to attend at least one scientific conference per year.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold or be about to earn a PhD in neuroscience, biology, psychology, or a related field. Required experience includes working with mice and at least one neuroscience technique such as immunohistochemistry, neuronal tract tracing, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, or two-photon microscopy. Strong organization, communication, and collaboration skills are expected. Preferred experience includes mouse breeding, euthanasia, MATLAB/Python programming, manuscript writing, figure preparation, and microdissection.

How to apply: send a CV and two publications that reflect your skills and research interests. Additional materials, including letters of recommendation, will be requested for shortlisted candidates. Review begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.

Institution and location: Vanderbilt University, United States.

What's required

Candidate should hold or be about to earn a PhD in neuroscience, biology, psychology, or a related discipline. Required experience includes working with mice and at least one neuroscience technique such as anatomy (immunohistochemistry, neuronal tract tracing) or physiology (electrophysiology, calcium imaging, two-photon microscopy). Applicants should be organized, able to set individual goals, and have strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaborative work in a diverse community. Preferred experience includes mouse breeding and euthanasia, programming in MATLAB or Python for large dataset analysis, making figures and writing manuscripts, and microdissection or other fine motor-skill-intensive techniques.

How to apply

Send a CV and two publications that reflect your skills and ongoing research interests. Shortlisted applicants will later be asked for additional materials such as letters of recommendation. Review begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.
