About this position
Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) is inviting applications for two postdoctoral research positions through the Exploration Fellowship program. This is a strong opportunity for early-career researchers in astronomy, astrophysics, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, planetary science, engineering, and related interdisciplinary areas.
The fellowship is designed to support independent research in collaboration with SESE faculty, with a special preference for projects that connect multiple SESE research areas and address important “big picture” scientific questions. SESE’s research environment spans astrobiology, astrophysics, biogeoscience, cosmology, Earth surface processes, geology, geophysics, instrumentation and systems engineering, planetary science, science education, and more.
The position is based on the Tempe Campus at Arizona State University in the United States and requires physical presence on site. The appointment is full-time and benefits-eligible, with an anticipated start window between March and July 2027. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed annually for up to two additional years, depending on performance, university needs, and available resources.
Funding includes an annual salary of $75,000, a $4,000 relocation expense, and a $12,000 research budget. No scholarship name is indicated because this is a postdoctoral research opening rather than a studentship.
Eligibility requirements include a Ph.D. in astrophysics, biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, physics, planetary science, or a related field by the time of appointment, and applicants must be within four years of receiving the doctorate. Desired qualifications include a strong publication or research record, demonstrated ability to carry out the proposed work, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary research.
To apply, candidates should prepare an application package through Interfolio including a cover letter that states the proposed research topic and names two SESE faculty mentors, a current CV, a research proposal of up to five pages, one representative paper, and contact details for three references. The deadline is 2027-01-22, though applications may be accepted into a reserve pool on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
