About this position
The Ellison Institute of Technology’s Institute of Materials & Devices for Life Sciences (MDLS) is recruiting postdoctoral researchers for its interdisciplinary Tissue Programme in Oxford, United Kingdom. Led by Dr Linna Zhou and Professor Hagan Bayley, the programme develops technologies for fabricating three-dimensional living, synthetic and hybrid tissues.
The research aims to create functional, patterned tissues for modelling human disease, testing therapeutics, modulating tissue function and supporting the repair of damaged tissues and organs. The programme combines stem cell biology, tissue engineering and device engineering, with a strong focus on translational and clinical potential.
Researchers may contribute to cell biology projects involving stem cell culture, differentiation and organoid models, including brain, cardiac and immune organoids. Other research directions include cellular and tissue electrophysiology, patch-clamp recording, multielectrode arrays, calcium imaging and optogenetics; bioinformatics for bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics and proteomics; hydrogel synthesis and characterisation; and microfluidics or bioprinting for the fabrication of stem-cell-derived tissues.
The Tissue Programme is part of the MDLS Institute, which brings together research in nanopore sensing and sequencing, 3D tissue construction and device engineering. The group comprises approximately 15 postdoctoral researchers, DPhil students and laboratory technicians, offering a collaborative environment spanning biology, chemistry, materials science and engineering.

What's required
Applicants must have completed a PhD in a relevant field such as human cell biology, physiology and pathology, biophysics, biomedical engineering or materials science. They should demonstrate research achievements including publications in high-impact journals and presentations at international conferences; data analysis and interpretation skills; and experience in one or more of stem cell and tissue culture, microfluidics, bioprinting, device design and fabrication, or hydrogels. Candidates should be able to work independently, think creatively, solve complex experimental problems, troubleshoot technical issues, understand current developments, identify future research directions, manage multiple projects, communicate effectively, collaborate across disciplines, and work with resilience and adaptability in a fast-paced research environment. Applicants must have the permanent right to work in the UK, although sponsorship may be considered case by case, and must live within commuting distance of Oxford or be willing to relocate.
