About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher for development of graphene-based nerve interface device at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

The Department of Chemistry and the Nanoscience Center are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for a multidisciplinary project aimed at a breakthrough in peripheral neuroprosthetics. The work is part of Project GIN2, funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation, and is carried out in collaboration with researchers at the University of Jyväskylä and Tampere University. The position focuses on the design and fabrication of an implantable graphene-based nerve-machine interface for bidirectional signal transmission, including measurement and stimulation, to be used in animal model experiments.

The successful candidate will join an international team of chemists, biologists, physicists, engineers, and surgeons. The project builds on prior advances in materials, devices, and cell experiments, and the selected postdoctoral researcher will contribute to developing flexible graphene field-effect transistor devices and related implantable bioelectronic systems. The role is described as high risk, high gain, and requires commitment, independence, and a collaborative mindset.

Immediate supervisors are Professor Mika Pettersson and Dr. Andreas Johansson. The position is based at the Department of Chemistry and Nanoscience Center at the University of Jyväskylä.

Eligibility highlights include a completed PhD in a suitable field, prior experience with micro- and nanofabrication techniques such as e-beam or optical lithography, and strong English communication skills. Additional strengths include experience in electronic transport measurements, circuit design, Raman microscopy, AFM, SEM, neuroscience, and biological or in-vivo sensors. Experience collaborating with biologists or medical researchers is also valued. The appointee is expected to work thoroughly, independently, and as part of a team, while participating in group meetings, student supervision, and teaching.

The contract is fixed-term from October 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter until July 31, 2028. The salary is approximately 3600–4800 EUR per month gross, depending on qualifications and experience, and includes a holiday bonus. Relocation support is available for candidates moving from abroad.

Applications must be submitted in English via the university recruitment system by 2026-09-06. Applicants should ensure their ORCID profile is up to date and publicly visible. Required documents include a CV, a short motivation/cover letter, a numbered list of publications, and a degree certificate for the highest degree.

This is a strong opportunity for researchers interested in graphene, neuroprosthetics, flexible electronics, nanofabrication, and translational biomedical device development within a highly multidisciplinary and international environment in Finland.

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD in a suitable field completed before the starting date. Previous experience in micro- and nanofabrication techniques (e-beam or optical lithography and associated techniques) is required. Experience or knowledge in electronic transport measurements, electronic circuit design, and characterization methods such as Raman microscopy, AFM, and SEM is an advantage, as is experience in neuroscience, biological or in-vivo sensors, and collaboration with biologists or medical researchers. Candidates should have thorough working methods, be able to work independently, be a team player, and have excellent written and spoken English. The selected person is expected to participate actively in group meetings, supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to teaching.
