About this position
The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for a one-year project, with the possibility of extension for up to three years, at its Flatirons Campus in Boulder, Colorado, United States.
The research focuses on the acoustics and aeroacoustics of industrial equipment in the energy sector, including cooling systems, fuel cells, and distributed wind turbines. The postdoctoral researcher will combine experimental and numerical methods to support the development of quieter, more efficient energy systems.
Experimental work will involve deploying microphone arrays that cover audible and low-frequency ranges at different distances and radial distributions. The researcher will conduct field measurements, post-process and analyze acoustic data, identify key findings, and help plan future measurement campaigns. Numerical activities will include implementing existing sound-emission and propagation models, developing next-generation models, validating simulations against measurements, and proposing equipment design changes to reduce noise.
The researcher will collaborate with the U.S. Department of Energy, other national laboratories, industry, academic partners, and international organizations. Responsibilities also include publishing results in technical journals and conference proceedings, presenting at conferences and review meetings, and supporting proposal preparation.
Applicants must have received a PhD within the last three years, or complete it before the assignment begins, in a relevant discipline such as acoustics, aeroacoustics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, statistics, data science, or a similar field. Strong Python and open-source data-analysis skills, published relevant research, familiarity with agentic AI tools, and excellent communication skills are required. Experience with microphone arrays, low-frequency or infrasound measurements, signal processing, numerical and experimental acoustics, energy-sector research, IEC 61400-11, ISO 9613-2, BPM and Amiet models, and fan or turbomachinery noise is preferred.
The salary is $76,600–$126,400 annually for full-time work, with comprehensive benefits and possible relocation reimbursement. Applicants must satisfy DOE access requirements, obtain a federal PIV card, pass a background investigation and pre-employment drug test, and have the required work authorization.
Applications should include the online application form, a cover letter, and a resume. The anticipated submission window is up to 30 days from posting and may be extended.
