About this position

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) is recruiting a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for its AgroBioSciences (AgBS) program in Benguerir, Morocco. The position sits within a multidisciplinary research environment focused on solving real African agriculture challenges through science and technology.

The project centers on the development of fully biodegradable nutrient carriers and soil amendments derived from agricultural waste. The successful candidate will work at the interface of materials science, polymer chemistry, and sustainable agriculture to address nutrient use efficiency, water scarcity, and soil health. A major aim is to design highly porous biosolid carriers capable of delivering both immediate and slow-release fertilization while improving soil water retention, especially in drought-prone agricultural systems.

Research activities include extracting and functionalizing biopolymers from agricultural and marine biomass, developing carrier formulations using ionotropic gelation and freeze-drying, and incorporating biochar into composite carriers for controlled nutrient release. The role also involves extensive physicochemical characterization using techniques such as FTIR, SEM/TEM/AFM, BET surface area and porosity analysis, XRD, TGA/DSC, and zeta potential measurements.

The researcher will develop encapsulation strategies for NPK nutrients, measure loading capacity and release kinetics in water and soil using UV-Vis and ICP-OES, model release profiles, and examine the effects of thermochemical treatment. Additional responsibilities include greenhouse experiments under varying moisture regimes, assessment of plant growth and physiological stress markers, analysis of nutrient uptake, and monitoring of soil hydro-physical properties and biodegradability.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with strong experience in biopolymer extraction and functionalization, material characterization, and controlled release studies. Experience with greenhouse experimentation, statistical analysis software, and peer-reviewed publication is expected. English communication skills are required. The position is offered as a postdoctoral researcher contract (CDD) for 1 year, renewable.

To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF containing a cover letter, a detailed CV including publications, and contact details for three professional references. The application deadline is 2026-09-06.
