About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Biology at Maynooth University, Ireland
The Biology Department at Maynooth University is recruiting a Post Doctoral Researcher for the Ancient Woodlands Ireland project. This is a full-time, fixed-term research post in Biology with strong links to Environmental Science, Geography, Earth Science, and Geology-related landscape change research through the use of GIS, remote sensing, paleoecology, and historical woodland analysis.
The project aims to build an all-island Ancient Woodlands Inventory for Ireland and to examine how woodland cover has changed over the last 400 years. The successful candidate will work mainly with Dr John Devaney and Prof Fiona Walsh on Task 5, focusing on ancient woodland plant and soil indicators. Work will include vegetation surveys at ancient and recent woodland sites across Ireland, analysis of existing national forest vegetation datasets, development of indicator plant species lists, and evaluation of soil microbiome data using DNA extraction and phylogenetic cluster analysis.
This position is especially relevant to candidates with interests in forest ecology, contemporary ecology, paleoecology, GIS, remote sensing, soil microbiology, and biodiversity assessment. The role contributes to woodland protection and restoration priorities in Ireland.
Funding and salary: The role is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Salary is listed as €47,273 per annum (2026 scale, point 1).
Eligibility and requirements: The post is for a postdoctoral researcher capable of carrying out field-based ecological surveys and laboratory/data analysis. Relevant experience in ecology, vegetation surveys, GIS/remote sensing, DNA-based soil microbiome analysis, and related quantitative methods would be advantageous.
Deadline: Applications close at 23:30 Irish local time on 23 November 2026. Applications must be submitted online before the deadline; incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
