About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a postdoctoral position within the Climate Nexus Convention initiative. This opportunity is based at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), renowned for its interdisciplinary research in systems biology and biomedicine. The successful candidate will join the Environmental Cheminformatics (ECI) group, led by Professor Emma Schymanski, which specializes in identifying unknown chemicals and assessing their impact on human health using high resolution mass spectrometry, cheminformatics, and scalable open science workflows.

The Climate Nexus Convention, funded by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity (MECB), is a five-year project designed to make Luxembourg climate-ready by integrating research, education, policy, and public engagement. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the Institutional Readiness pillar, leveraging socio-environmental data to enhance climate services and monitor systemic climate-related risks. Responsibilities include planning and implementing field studies to map chemical substances in Luxembourg, with a focus on those detrimental to human health and ecosystems in the context of climate change. The role involves collaboration with the Department of Engineering, MECB, and the Water Management Authority (AGE).

Applicants should possess a PhD in environmental science, natural sciences, engineering, cheminformatics, or a closely related field, with a strong background in environmental chemistry and non-target screening using high resolution mass spectrometry (NT-HRMS). Experience in supervision, project management, and willingness to supervise PhD students is expected. Candidates must demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a proactive and self-driven research approach, and a commitment to research excellence through high-quality data interpretation and publications. Fluent English communication skills are essential, and proficiency in Luxembourgish, French, or German, or willingness to learn, is advantageous.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and inclusive research environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The position is a fixed-term contract for 12 months, full-time, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 85,176. Applications should be submitted online through the HR system, including a CV with links to relevant profiles, cover letter, PhD diploma or expected defense date, transcript of university courses, list of publications, and names and contact information of three referees. Early application is encouraged as applications are processed upon reception. Applications by email will not be considered.

This postdoctoral opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about environmental science, climate change, and interdisciplinary research, seeking to contribute to impactful projects with policy relevance and societal benefit.
