About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher opportunity at the University of Amsterdam in the Faculty of Humanities, working on digital mediations of religious and civilisational narratives in East Africa. The project is part of IRInA, an interdisciplinary ERC Starting Grant led by Dr. Gulnaz Sibgatullina, and is based in the department of History, European Studies and Religious Studies. The research focuses on how actors in Uganda and potentially another East African country receive, reshape, negotiate, or contest narratives circulating through digital platforms and public debate.
The postdoctoral researcher will design and conduct an original project using digital ethnography, qualitative content analysis, interviews, and fieldwork. The topic connects religious studies, media and communication studies, anthropology, African studies, political science, sociology, and international relations. The team studies how civilisational identity, anti-colonialism, sovereignty, multipolarity, and traditional values circulate across social media and offline settings, and how local audiences interpret them.
Eligibility highlights: a completed PhD is required; experience in East Africa and qualitative methods is strongly preferred; knowledge of languages spoken in Uganda is an asset; Swahili or another relevant language is an advantage; and applicants should have strong English and a publication record appropriate to career stage. The role also requires willingness to do fieldwork in Uganda and training in Paris, plus the ability to develop an independent, ethically responsible research design.
Funding: this is a salaried postdoctoral position, initially for one year with a possible two-year extension after positive evaluation. Salary is €3,706–€5,760 gross per month for full-time work, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The project also provides funding and practical support for fieldwork, conference participation, and research training within approved plans and budget.
Deadline: 15 October 2026. Apply with a single PDF including a cover letter, CV with publications, a 1,500–2,000 word research proposal, one writing sample, and two academic referees. Contact [email protected] for questions.
