About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher position in Doppler and Sympathetic Cooling of Radioactive Ions at the University of Jyväskylä, hosted by the IGISOL facility within the Accelerator Laboratory and Department of Physics.

The project, DopCool, is a newly funded Research Council of Finland project focused on laser-based cooling of short-lived radioactive ions and ultra-high-precision mass measurements using the JYFLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer. The research sits at the intersection of atomic physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, laser spectroscopy, ion trapping, and mass spectrometry.

The postdoctoral researcher will help install and operate laser systems, optimize a laser-cooling trap developed with KU Leuven collaborators, design beam-manipulation devices, integrate the trap with JYFLTRAP, and perform Doppler and sympathetic cooling measurements on stable and radioactive ions. The role also includes simulation work, participation in IGISOL experiments, conference presentations, and journal publications.

Applicants must have a completed PhD before the start date. Required experience includes experimental atomic, nuclear or particle physics, laser systems, vacuum technology and instrumentation, electronics, data acquisition, scientific programming (e.g. Python), and data analysis. Strong English skills, motivation for experimental research, and problem-solving ability are essential. Experience with Doppler/sympathetic cooling, ion trapping, mass spectrometry, laser spectroscopy, and radioactive ion beam production is advantageous.

The position starts in November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, is fixed-term for 1 year with a possible 2-year extension, and offers a salary of approximately €3700–4200/month gross plus holiday bonus and relocation support. Apply in the university recruitment system by 2026-09-25. Submit a CV, motivation letter, publication list, and degree certificate in English/PDF; two reference letters must be sent directly to the contact email.
