About this position

This postdoctoral position is based in the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit at the University of Oulu and is part of the European Union LIFE project “LIFE in Support of Survival”. The project is centered on the Saimaa ringed seal, a critically endangered endemic species living only in Lake Saimaa, Finland.

The successful candidate will contribute to conservation genomics research aimed at supporting the long-term survival of this population. The project combines genetic research, population modelling, and conservation practice to develop tools and strategies that can improve monitoring and guide targeted action for the species.

The postdoctoral researcher will work on SNP-based molecular approaches for monitoring Saimaa ringed seals and on whole-genome analyses focused on pup mortality. The role also involves collaboration with national and international stakeholders and participation in an international, multidisciplinary research environment.

The position is embedded in a broader conservation effort led by the University of Oulu in close collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland. The project aims to develop efficient DNA-based monitoring tools and apply state-of-the-art genomics to questions directly relevant to conservation management.

The role includes supporting Master's and PhD students, contributing to teaching at the Master's and PhD level, and participating in external funding calls. The advertised supervisor contact is Assistant Professor Stefan Prost.
