About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Environmental Microbial Ecology at Aarhus University, Denmark
The Department of Biology, Aarhus University, is inviting applications for a two-year, fixed-term postdoctoral position in environmental microbial ecology within the Section for Microbiology. The project investigates electrically conductive iron minerals in anoxic aquatic sediments and aims to identify and characterize the microorganisms associated with these minerals, with a focus on their phylogenetic identity and ecophysiology.
The research combines microbiology, microbial ecology, microbial physiology, electromicrobiology, advanced microscopy, FISH, correlative imaging, DNA- and/or RNA-based omics, and stable isotope incubation experiments. The postdoc will have considerable freedom to shape the methodological approach and develop ideas within the project framework, and will also contribute to supervision of BSc, MSc, and PhD students and possibly some teaching.
Applicants should hold a PhD in biology, earth and environmental science, biotechnology, or a related field, or expect to complete it before the start date. Required experience includes advanced microscopy and/or molecular microbial ecology methods, a strong interest in microbial physiology and electromicrobiology, a systematic approach to method development and testing, a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals, and excellent English communication skills. Experience with FISH, correlative microscopy, stable isotope probing, omics analysis, and sediment/environmental samples is desirable.
The position is funded by the Villum Foundation through the Villum Experiment programme. The workplace is Aarhus University, Ny Munkegade 114, Aarhus C, Denmark. The expected start date is 1 February 2027, and the application deadline is 29 November 2026.
Applications must be submitted through Aarhus University's recruitment system. The application should be in English and include a CV, degree certificate, complete publication list, statement of future research plans, information about research activities, teaching portfolio, and verified teaching experience if applicable.
