About this position
The University of Oulu is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Environmental Social Sciences and Digital Infrastructures to join the General Education Research Unit in the Faculty of Education and Psychology. The researcher will work on the Research Council of Finland-funded DATAVOID project, “From a Void to the Cloud? Data Centres in the Afterlives of Arctic Industries.”
DATAVOID investigates how data centres emerging in post-industrial northern communities interact with the physical and social legacies of earlier industries. The project combines ethnographic and archival research with artistic collaboration and comparative cases in Finland, Canada, and other Nordic regions.
The successful applicant will develop comparative research on data centre development and industrial transformation in the Arctic, with a primary focus on Canada and potential fieldwork in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Methods may include interviews, ethnographic observation, archival research, and analysis of media and policy materials. The role also involves publications, comparative analysis, collaboration with international partners, research communication, stakeholder engagement, and approximately 5% teaching and supervision.
Applicants must hold a relevant doctorate completed before employment begins and no more than 10 years before the application deadline. Relevant backgrounds include environmental social sciences, anthropology, human geography, science and technology studies, sociology, or a related field. Candidates should demonstrate qualitative research expertise, strong publication ability, excellent English, and readiness for extended research stays in Canada. Experience with Arctic or Canadian contexts, community-engaged research, digital infrastructures, industrial transformation, and interdisciplinary collaboration is desirable.
This is a full-time, fixed-term three-year position beginning 1 March 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter, based at the University of Oulu. The starting gross salary is approximately €3,700–€4,300 per month before taxes. Apply in English by 26 November 2026 at 23:59 Finnish local time with a motivation letter, research statement, CV, publication list, writing sample, and two referees.
