About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) position at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS), Göttingen, Germany, in the Department Solar & Stellar Interiors.
The project, part of the newly established ERC StG PLANETARE, focuses on exoplanets, stellar magnetism, astrophysics, and magnetic star-planet interaction. The successful candidate will develop novel methods to detect exoplanets through their magnetic interaction with host stars, with emphasis on planet-induced flaring, statistical inference, search strategies, and physical/forward modelling.
Research tasks include identifying young stars and searching archival and upcoming Kepler, TESS, and PLATO observations for planet-induced flaring; measuring how the strength and frequency of such flaring evolve with system age; and building a forward model of the magnetic feedback loop between planet and star.
The team is small and newly formed, consisting of two postdocs and one PhD student, led by PI Dr. Ekaterina Ilin. The group encourages independent paper and proposal leadership and participation in international meetings in both stellar and exoplanet communities.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in physics or astrophysics by the start date, experience with statistical inference and/or modelling of stellar magnetic fields, teamwork skills, and strong English proficiency.
Funding and terms: 4-year appointment, remuneration according to EG 13 TVöD-Bund. Start date can be between January and October 2027.
Application deadline: 30 October 2026. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, references, and certificates via the application portal.
