About this position

The University of Vaasa, located in Finland, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Finance for a fixed term of three years, starting at the beginning of September 2026 or as agreed. The position is based in the School of Accounting and Finance, one of Finland’s largest and most internationally recognized educational units in its field. The School comprises four disciplines: Accounting, Finance, Business Law, and Economics, and is known for its high-quality research and publications in leading journals.

The postdoctoral researcher will join the Finance and Financial Accounting research group, contributing to scientific research, teaching, thesis supervision, and administrative tasks. The research profile is closely aligned with the School’s main focus areas: Financial Markets, Instruments, and Institutions; Financial Analysis of Firm Policies and Outcomes; Governance and Compliance; Responsibility and Sustainability; and Risk Measurement and Management. Teaching and supervision responsibilities support both the Bachelor’s Program in Accounting and Finance and the EFMD-accredited Master’s Degree Programme in Finance.

The University of Vaasa offers a vibrant, international academic community with 7000 students and 650 staff members. The campus features state-of-the-art research laboratories and teaching facilities, located near the Vaasa city centre. The university’s three-track career model provides flexibility and growth opportunities, including tenure track, research and project-focused track, and teaching-oriented track. Employees benefit from comprehensive occupational health services, sports and cultural benefits, flexible working hours, partial remote work options, and a versatile reward system. Each employee is automatically enrolled in a pension scheme, with the majority of contributions paid by the employer.

The salary for the Postdoctoral Researcher is based on demand level 5 of the Finnish University Salary System (YPJ), ranging from approximately 3600 to 4000 euros per month, depending on experience and performance. The annual working time is 1612 hours, and a detailed task description will be specified in the Annual Work Plan. The employment is subject to a probationary period.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree and demonstrate the ability to conduct independent scientific research, as well as possess appropriate teaching skills. Essential qualifications include strong analytical, writing, and communication skills, a proven research track record with publications in peer-reviewed journals relevant to finance, accounting, or economics, and experience in obtaining external research funding and international research mobility. Teaching merits, including pedagogical training, will be considered, and applicants may be invited to give a teaching demonstration as part of the assessment process.

To apply, candidates should use the University of Vaasa’s online application system and submit the required annexes: CV (using the required template), list of publications, and a 1-2 page cover letter explaining their interest and expertise in the research field, including previous and ongoing related research. Applications must be submitted by midnight 1 May 2026 (EEST) and can be in Finnish or English. For further information about the position, contact Professor Sami Vähämaa at [email protected].
