About this position

CNRS is advertising a 24-month postdoctoral researcher position in Food System Solutions & Quantitative Sustainability Modeling within the ERC FLORA project at the Laboratoire de géologie de l’École normale supérieure (ENS - PSL) in Paris, France.

The project focuses on identifying priority targets for food-system interventions and evaluating solutions that can improve environmental and human health outcomes while limiting trade-offs. The work combines environmental science, agricultural economics, systems modeling, biophysical modeling, economic modeling, and multi-objective optimization.

Research themes include climate change, water use, biodiversity loss, nitrogen impacts, land use, livestock systems, dietary shifts, agricultural practices, trade adjustment, and food waste reduction. The successful candidate will contribute to quantitative scenario analysis and modeling frameworks linking food demand, agricultural production, land use, and environmental/health impacts, with synergies to the PREF-Alim project on dietary change in France.

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant quantitative field such as environmental sciences, environmental or agricultural economics, agronomy, or systems modeling. Strong programming skills, experience with large datasets, and reproducible research practices are essential. Experience in optimization, integrated assessment, land-use modeling, or related methods is highly desirable. English fluency is required; French is optional.

The contract offers a gross monthly salary of €3,080 to €4,541 depending on experience, plus research support for travel, conferences, equipment, and open-access publishing. The application deadline is 22 October 2026.

To apply, candidates must submit a CV, two academic references, and a cover letter describing their fit and a potential research study they would lead in the post.

What's required

Applicants should have a PhD in Environmental Sciences, Environmental or Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Systems Modeling, or a related quantitative discipline. Essential requirements include experience with quantitative research and programming (e.g. Python, C++, Matlab, R), handling large datasets such as high-resolution global maps or socio-economic/agricultural/environmental datasets, and familiarity with reproducible research practices including documentation and sharing of data and code. Desirable experience includes economic modeling, biophysical or land-use modeling, integrated assessment modeling, optimization techniques or network analysis, and knowledge of food systems, agricultural production, planetary boundaries, or dietary transitions. English fluency is required; French is welcome but not required.

How to apply

Prepare a detailed CV, contact details for 2 academic references, and a cover letter of up to 2 pages explaining your fit and proposing a research study you could lead in the post. Submit the application through the CNRS employment portal before the deadline.
