About this position
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance lifecycle analysis and technoeconomic analysis for major U.S. industries. The position is based in the Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies Group within the Manufacturing Science Division of ORNL’s Energy Science and Technology Directorate.
The researcher will contribute to two major efforts. One focuses on identifying cost-effective emerging and industrial-scale technologies for recycling critical minerals from electronic waste, supporting the U.S. Department of Energy’s approach to e-waste recycling. The other supports manufacturers and water utilities in establishing long-term targets to improve energy and water efficiency across their U.S. operations.
Research will address real-world sustainability challenges across chemical production, forest products, critical minerals, materials, and manufacturing. The postdoctoral researcher will use primary equipment data from ORNL and industrial partners to quantify costs, energy use, and related factors, while developing high-quality, reproducible lifecycle and technoeconomic analyses.
The role offers an opportunity to work across multiple multidisciplinary projects, interact with ORNL researchers, industry collaborators, academic partners, and project sponsors, and contribute to new research initiatives. The successful researcher will disseminate findings through multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and help translate research into lower-cost, more energy-efficient materials, manufacturing technologies, and products.
