About this position
Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) invites applications for one full-time Postdoctoral Researcher in the Marine Bioresource Development and Application Research Program, Department of Life and Earth Sciences, at the Yokosuka Headquarters in Kanagawa, Japan.
The researcher will contribute to the project Exploration and Functional Elucidation of Real Marine Plastic Degrading Enzymes for a Circular Economy (FY2026–FY2028), led by Principal Investigator Shunichi Ishii. The research aims to discover diverse plastic-degrading enzymes from real ocean environments and clarify their evolutionary processes and molecular functions.
Possible research themes include: searching for PET- and PE-degrading enzymes in marine environments through comprehensive gene analysis; producing degrading enzymes using heterologous expression or cell-free systems and evaluating enzyme activity and substrate specificity; and conducting multi-meta-omics analyses of plastic waste exposed to deep-sea environments. Related areas include microbiology, enzyme engineering, bioinformatics, molecular biology, microbial ecology, systems genomics, and functional biochemistry.
Applicants must hold a relevant PhD, or expect to obtain one by the hiring date, and must generally have received the degree on or after April 2021. The appointment is expected to begin February 1 or April 1, 2027, and is renewable through March 31, 2029, subject to project conditions and performance.
The annual income is approximately 4–6 million yen, with a reference range of 4.4–5.6 million yen. Commuting and relocation support are available, and applicable social insurance coverage is provided. Applications should include a CV, research-achievement and funding record, a one-page previous-research summary, a one-page research plan, and up to two major publications. Applications must arrive by November 26, 2026.
