About this position
The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the Data Science Research Program within its Information and Earth Science Research Division at the Yokohama Research Institute in Kanagawa, Japan.
The researcher will contribute to the CREST project “Connecting Environmental Dynamics Changes and a Circular Economy: Marine Plastic Digital Twins”, led by Principal Investigator Daisuke Matsuoka. The project aims to develop an infrastructure capable of representing and analyzing marine plastic pollution and its connections with environmental and socioeconomic processes.
The work will include designing and constructing a digital twin platform, quantifying observation data—particularly remote-sensing imagery—using image-analysis artificial intelligence, and integrating environmental dynamics models with socioeconomic models. The environmental component includes ocean plastic-waste tracking, while the socioeconomic component represents plastic flows through system-dynamics modeling.
The project also investigates future extensions to microplastics and their effects on ecosystems and food chains. The research environment brings together oceanography, environmental science, information science, environmental economics, remote sensing, machine learning, and computational modeling within a national marine-earth science research organization.
The position is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral appointment associated with the project and is based at JAMSTEC’s Yokohama Research Institute. Employment is initially planned from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2028, with possible renewal through March 31, 2030 depending on project progress, performance, and budget.
