About this position

The Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM), part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in the Transfer Group. This full-time position is based in Linz, Austria, and is initially offered for one year with the possibility of extension for up to three additional years. The working languages are English and German, and the research environment is highly international and collaborative.

The successful candidate will join the ARTECO project, which focuses on predicting Arctic tundra ecosystem development. This project is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and involves close cooperation with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK, Germany) and the University of Zurich (UZH, Switzerland). Research topics include mathematical modeling and simulation of heat transfer in permafrost soil under various climate-induced temperature scenarios, considering factors such as snow coverage, shrubbery, and fire. The project also addresses the identification of soil parameters that determine energy fluxes and permafrost dynamics using inverse problems techniques. Developed algorithms and methods will be integrated into the LPJmL Dynamic Global Vegetation Model, and the role includes participation in field work and visits to partner institutions.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Mathematics or a related field and demonstrate a strong background in numerical mathematics, modeling, and simulation. Knowledge of inverse problems and experience in programming languages such as Matlab, C, and Python are essential. High competence in oral and written English is required. The position offers excellent opportunities to collaborate with international experts and contribute to impactful research in climate and environmental science.

The minimum annual gross salary for this position is EUR 70,200.20 (full-time), in accordance with the salary scheme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
