About this position
The University of Oulu is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Mathematical Sciences within the Faculty of Science. The position is based in the Research Group on Computational Uncertainty Quantification, led by Assistant Professor Babak Maboudi Afkham, and is connected to the Mathematical Sciences Research Unit and the wider inverse problems community at the university.
The research focus is on Bayesian inverse problems and computational uncertainty quantification. The successful candidate will develop and analyse new Bayesian prior models, study high-dimensional and potentially infinite-dimensional posterior distributions, and contribute to the mathematical and computational foundations of inverse problems. The role combines rigorous analysis with computational work, including research software development in Python.
The position is embedded in active collaborations through the SPARSe Academy Research Fellowship project, the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures (FAME) Flagship, and international links with Johannes Kepler University Linz and industrial partners. The group’s work aims to create uncertainty quantification methods that are mathematically sound and practically useful in industrial applications.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a closely related discipline, with strong preparation in analysis. The university also expects the ability to carry out independent research, teach in mathematics and applied mathematics, and work in an international, interdisciplinary environment. Experience with pseudodifferential operator theory, Bayesian inference, inverse problems, scientific computing, and student supervision is especially welcome, as are Finnish language skills.
The appointment is fixed-term for three years and is expected to begin on 1 November 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting gross salary is approximately EUR 3,700–4,300 per month before taxes, plus a performance-based salary component.
