About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher opportunity at the University of Oulu, Finland

The Faculty of Science, Mathematical Sciences Research Unit, University of Oulu is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Research Group on Computational Uncertainty Quantification, led by Assistant Professor Babak Maboudi Afkham. The project sits at the intersection of mathematics, applied mathematics, Bayesian inverse problems, uncertainty quantification, and scientific computing.

The research focus is on developing new mathematical and computational methods for Bayesian inverse problems, especially new Bayesian prior models and methods for exploring complex high-dimensional or potentially infinite-dimensional posterior distributions. The post also involves research software development in Python, collaboration with the SPARSe Academy Research Fellowship project, the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures (FAME) Flagship, and international partners including Johannes Kepler University Linz and industrial collaborators.

Eligibility highlights: a doctoral degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field; strong background in mathematical analysis; ability to do independent research; teaching skills; strong Python/scientific computing skills; fluent English. Preferred experience includes pseudodifferential operator theory, inverse problems, Bayesian inference, uncertainty quantification, student supervision, and collaborative research.

Funding and terms: fixed-term employment for three years, starting on 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Starting gross salary is approximately 3700–4300 EUR/month before taxes, plus a performance-based component.

How to apply: submit the application in English through the University of Oulu recruitment system by 22 September 2026 at 23:59 Finnish local time. Include a cover letter, CV, narrative CV, list of publications, and teaching portfolio. Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed and asked to provide diplomas and references.
