About this position

The Rega Institute for Medical Research at KU Leuven, within the Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a fully funded 1-year position in medicinal chemistry. The research group, led by Prof. Dr. Peter Verwilst, is internationally oriented and specializes in medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, and molecular design to develop innovative therapeutic strategies. The group’s research addresses the urgent challenge of antimicrobial resistance, operating at the interface of fundamental and applied science.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will join an interdisciplinary team and actively contribute to ongoing and new research initiatives in antibacterial drug discovery. Your responsibilities will include designing, synthesizing, and optimizing small molecules with antibacterial activity, analyzing structure–activity relationship (SAR) data, and translating findings into targeted design strategies. You will set up and drive SAR campaigns within the team, contribute to scientific publications and presentations, and foster a collaborative, results-driven research environment.

The ideal candidate holds a PhD in medicinal chemistry or a closely related field, with strong expertise in organic synthesis and SAR analysis. Prior experience in antimicrobial projects is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate independence, initiative, leadership, and excellent communication skills in English. The position offers access to state-of-the-art medicinal chemistry infrastructure and opportunities to strengthen your academic track record through publications and conferences.

KU Leuven provides a stimulating and international research environment, committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. The start date is flexible but must be no later than January 1, 2027. The application deadline is June 30, 2026. For more information, contact Prof. Dr. Peter Verwilst at [email protected].

Apply online via the KU Leuven jobsite. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated researchers to advance their careers in antibacterial drug development and medicinal chemistry at a leading European institution.
