About this position
Pennsylvania State University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Mobility Data Analytics in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management (RPTM) at Penn State University Park.
The project focuses on mobility data analytics for public lands, including work with the National Park Service and other federal agencies to study visitor flows, improve visitor counting procedures, and develop dashboards to visualize visitor use on public lands. The postdoc will also contribute to proposal preparation, research execution, and mentoring students, with opportunities to scope additional research directions with faculty mentors.
This is a full-time research-only postdoctoral position with no teaching expectation. The position is intended to strengthen the scholar’s research profile for future placement at a leading university or research laboratory. Competitive benefits are available for full-time employees, and continuation beyond the term depends on university need, performance, and funding availability.
Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. is required, preferably in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field. Strong publication and presentation record, technical excellence, and experience in data mining, machine learning, natural language processing, deep learning, large language models, pattern recognition, computer vision, software development, and experimental design are expected. Strong written communication skills and the ability to work independently and mentor Ph.D., M.S., or undergraduate students are also important; interdisciplinary team experience is desirable.

What's required
A Ph.D. is required, preferably in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related area. Applicants should have a strong record of technical excellence shown through publications and presentations, and experience in data mining, machine learning, natural language processing, deep learning, large language models, pattern recognition, computer vision, or related methods. Strong prior software development experience, the ability to design and run experiments, strong written communication skills, and the ability to self-direct and mentor Ph.D., M.S., or undergraduate students are required. Interdisciplinary, team-oriented experience is desirable.
