About this position

Université de Strasbourg is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a 12-month position within the IDEX OPTIMUS project. The work is based at the Hubert Curien Multidisciplinary Institute (IPHC, UMR 7178 CNRS-Unistra), in the Department of Subatomic Research, C4PI team, with experimental activity connected to the University of Strasbourg in France.

The postdoctoral fellow will help set up and operate a Thomson spectrometer equipped with active-pixel CMOS (MAPS) detectors for characterising ion beams produced by laser-plasma acceleration. The project combines detector physics, scientific instrumentation, experimental beam diagnostics, and data analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers and researchers at LabCom LAMAPS to integrate and optimise detectors, then lead experimental measurement campaigns at the CYRCÉ facility in Strasbourg and the VEGA3 facility in Salamanca, Spain.

The role is strongly experimental and includes detector calibration and characterisation with particle beams, development of acquisition and processing procedures, and analysis of experimental data to reconstruct ion energy distributions. A further important aspect is comparing the performance of different generations of CMOS detectors in an environment affected by strong electromagnetic pulses (EMP). The appointee will also contribute to readout electronics optimisation, software tools for data acquisition and visualisation, technical reporting, scientific publications, conference presentations, and tracking recent developments in CMOS detectors and laser-plasma acceleration.

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent, with the doctorate obtained within the last three years. The call emphasises competence in particle detector physics, instrumentation, vacuum experiments, data analysis, electronics, and statistical methods. Prior knowledge of MAPS sensors or laser-plasma acceleration is advantageous, but the project also values independence, scientific rigour, initiative, teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to work in an international collaborative setting.

This is a full-time temporary postdoc position starting on 15 September 2026. The application deadline is 15 October 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Amsterdam). Candidates should apply via the University of Strasbourg recruitment page and use the provided annex documents for the application package.
