About this position
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher in Processing Science of Rare Earth Metals and Alloys within the Materials Science Division, based in Livermore, California, United States.
The project focuses on high-temperature processing and reaction science of rare earth (REE) metals and alloys, including molten metal flow, wetting, containment compatibility, metallothermic reaction pathways, intermediate phase formation, kinetics, and transport phenomena in metal-oxide systems. The role involves controlled-atmosphere experiments, development of specialized high-temperature equipment, and use of thermal analysis, diffraction, microscopy, thermodynamic interpretation, CALPHAD modeling, and time-resolved synchrotron diffraction.
This is a postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension up to three years. The posted salary range is $123,048 annually. The position is part of LLNL’s Advanced Materials Process Science Group and supports programmatic, Laboratory Directed Research and Development, and externally funded materials research.
Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field; experience with high-temperature materials processing, molten metals, reactive materials, ceramics, or metal-oxide reactions; knowledge of thermodynamics, phase equilibria, kinetics, mass transport, and/or interfacial phenomena; strong publication and presentation record. U.S. citizenship is required because the role needs an anticipated DOE Q-level security clearance.
How to apply: Submit your application through the SmartRecruiters portal linked in the posting. Review the clearance and citizenship requirements carefully before applying. Prepare evidence of your research experience, characterization skills, and publications.

What's required
Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field. Applicants must be able to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Required experience includes high-temperature materials processing, molten metals or reactive materials, metal-oxide reactions, ceramics, or related systems; knowledge of thermodynamics, phase equilibria, reaction kinetics, mass transport, and/or interfacial phenomena; and demonstrated use of characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, EDS, thermal analysis, surface/interface analysis, or metallography. Strong verbal and written communication skills, peer-reviewed publication record, and ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams are expected. Preferred experience includes droplet science, metallothermic reduction, extractive metallurgy, pyrometallurgy, REE processing, reactive casting, high-temperature corrosion, furnace/induction/vacuum/glovebox systems, liquid-metal wetting/contact-angle measurements, ceramic processing, protective coatings, thermodynamic modeling, atomistic simulation, or reaction-kinetics analysis.
How to apply
Apply through the SmartRecruiters application portal using the job posting link. Review the security clearance and citizenship requirements before submitting. Prepare materials showing your PhD, relevant high-temperature materials experience, characterization skills, and publication record.
