About this position
The National Laboratory of the Rockies is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher in Reaction Engineering for Biorefining in Golden, Colorado, United States. The researcher will join the RRES Center’s Chemical Catalysis and Reaction Engineering group.
The project focuses on reaction engineering for biomass fractionation into polysaccharide-rich pulps and lignin- and extractives-rich oils. The goal is to develop cost-effective process technologies, potentially using existing or retrofitted kraft pulping systems, while improving atom economy and enabling downstream fractionation of solid and liquid products. Related research includes biomass and waste-feedstock conversion, chemical recycling of waste plastics, lignin oxidation catalysis, catalytic depolymerization, reactor and catalyst design, separations, and analytical characterization.
The successful candidate will plan and conduct collaborative research, design and operate novel reactor systems, perform reaction engineering and catalyst/process design, work safely and independently, communicate results, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute effectively to a large multidisciplinary team of engineers and chemists.
Applicants must have received a PhD within the past three years and demonstrate experience in reaction engineering, transport phenomena in complex reactor systems, reactor design and operation, troubleshooting, safety procedures, and scholarly publication. Preferred experience includes biomass conversion, lignin chemistry, catalytic depolymerization, biorefining, complex-solid processing, downstream separations, and analytical techniques such as GC-MS.
The initial appointment is one year, with possible renewal up to three years. The salary range is $76,600–$126,400 annually, with a competitive benefits package. Applicants must apply through the NLR Workday portal and provide a cover letter and resume. The anticipated application window is up to 30 days and may be extended.
