About this position
CAMPSproject at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Socio-Spatial Studies, Geospatial Analysis, and Spatial Justice. The role sits within ETSAB–UPC and is part of the Comparative Atlas of Long-term Refugee Settlements, a five-year European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant project focused on the spatial organisation, transformation, and lived realities of long-term refugee settlements worldwide.
The project asks how hundreds of refugee settlements can be mapped where reliable spatial data are scarce, and what remote sensing, cartography, and spatial analysis can reveal about architecture, infrastructure, settlement transformation, and the limits of what remains invisible in mapping. The position combines GIS, cartography, remote sensing, architectural and urban research, and situated fieldwork to build a live comparative atlas of these settlements.
The postdoctoral researcher will help coordinate interdisciplinary work with GIS specialists, PhD researchers, and international partners, connecting spatial datasets and cartographic analysis with critical socio-spatial perspectives. The role also includes contributions to scientific communications, public-facing outputs, grant proposals, and the project’s international research network.
Applicants should be early-career researchers from fields such as geography, urban studies, architecture, critical cartography, spatial planning, or related disciplines. Strong expertise in GIS, cartography, and spatial research is especially valued, particularly experience working in data-scarce contexts. The team seeks candidates interested in the social, architectural, and political dimensions of mapping, spatial justice, and human settlements, along with strong research, writing, and communication skills.
Location: Barcelona, Spain.
Position level: Postdoctoral Researcher (R2).
Deadline: 16 November 2026.
Interested candidates should use the full offer and application link in the post to apply. The project website is also provided for further context about CAMPSproject and its research agenda.
