About this position

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Soil Health and Remediation for its SUSTAIN unit, Environmental Policies (EPS) group, in Belval, Luxembourg.

This 24-month fixed-term position focuses on the development and implementation of approaches for soil health, contaminated site management, and nature-based remediation. The successful candidate will contribute to the implementation phase of an Urban Soil Living Lab in Luxembourg through the Horizon Europe project URSOILL, and will support a working group on soil remediation and stabilization using nature-based solutions, particularly phytoremediation and phytomanagement.

Main responsibilities include literature review, design of field experiments and monitoring protocols across multiple urban sites, support and supervision of fieldwork, data analysis and interpretation, stakeholder engagement in the Living Lab, and preparation of scientific publications and project deliverables. The role also includes building a cross-border network of phytomanagement “Lighthouses” in the Greater Region through the Interreg project Light4Green, providing scientific and regulatory support on nature-based remediation for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contamination within the Interreg project Naturem, and helping set up a laboratory to test and evaluate soil remediation technologies, especially bioremediation and phytoremediation.

The postdoc will also support proposal development, submission, and implementation for collaborative research projects and engage with broader LIST activities related to soil protection. The role is positioned within a multidisciplinary and multicultural research environment that interfaces science, technology, and policy in environmental sustainability assessment and circularity.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Master’s degree and a PhD in soil or environmental sciences/engineering, or another relevant natural science or engineering field. Proven practical experience in nature-based soil remediation technologies is required. Strong English skills are essential; French, German, or Luxembourgish are advantageous.

Funding and conditions: the position is funded through Horizon Europe-related projects and offers a gross monthly salary of €6,094–€6,678 paid over 13 months (€79,222–€86,814 annually) for full-time employment, with pro rata adjustment for part-time. The position is based in Belval, Luxembourg, and applications are reviewed continuously until the vacancy is filled.

Application: submit a motivation letter, scientific CV, publication list, and contacts for two references via the online application system. Applications sent by email will not be considered.
